I Finally Approached My Gym Crush

A year of eye contact, and what finally changed had nothing to do with her.

On Saturday I was walking down Whitworth on my way to synagogue when I saw her from far off. Whitworth is my route to synagogue, and a couple months back I’d realized she walks the same street, going the other way. Same kind of outfit she wears at the gym. I clocked her immediately and knew there was no way to avoid this. And the strange part is that I had already decided, weeks earlier, that if this exact thing happened I would walk up and say something. So I did. I closed the distance, caught her eye, and waved. She took off her headphones.

To explain why that was a big deal, I have to go back.

There is a woman I have seen at the gym for almost a year, ever since I switched to this new place. We go at the same time, so we cross paths constantly. She is beautiful. She carries herself well and she seems genuinely warm. And in almost a year I never said a single word to her. Just eye contact, over and over, and then looking away.

What I did instead was build an entire architecture around her. Stories, loops, timing, the whole embarrassing apparatus that only runs this long because you never say it out loud.

The confusing part is that I approach people for a living. It is one of the few things I would call a superpower. I can walk up to anyone in any room and it costs me nothing. If I had met this woman at a bar I would not have thought twice. So the fact that I could not do it here bothered me enough that I took it to the method.

What surfaced first was not a fear. It was a value. The gym is the one room in my life that runs on clean energy. Everywhere else is negotiation, back and forth, the toiling that thought costs you. At the gym I show up for my body with total consistency, it asks nothing back, and I want nothing back. Pure. Unconditional. Walking over to her would introduce an agenda, and the moment you want something the one clean place becomes conditional. What I was protecting was never my ego from a no. I did not care about the no. I was protecting the one clean thing I had from becoming one more thing I have to toil over.

The method did not hand me an answer. It kept asking until I surfaced one myself. The action I landed on was this. Wait until we cross naturally, close enough that a word makes sense. Stop, say hello, introduce myself, be truthful, be present, see where it goes. No going out of my way, because going out of my way is the chasing.

Then I saw the trap inside my own instruction. We had never once crossed naturally at the gym. A place I go every single day, and it had never happened. If I forced it there I would have to go out of my way, and the audit would come with me, the wanting something in return. The natural crossing could not be manufactured. It had to arrive.

So I waited. For two, maybe three weeks, nothing. We never crossed. I kept showing up, kept doing my work, and stayed as close as I could to the state the action required. Not looking for her. Not steering toward her. Just ready.

Then came Friday night.

My dad, two family friends, and I were at the Shabbat table, and the conversation went long past the meal, deep into spirituality and growth and being your true self, until two in the morning. Somewhere in the middle of it I stopped and went almost third person on myself. I asked, when do I know when to speak. When is it my turn in this conversation. It was a question I had never once paused to ask. And when I looked for the answer there was none. The answer was, I will just know. If I am meant to say something it will be said, based on nothing more than the understanding of who I am. Accepting that gave me something I could not have reasoned my way into. If something is meant to be said by me, I do not need to manufacture the moment for it to be said. The moment will be made for me.

We sat until two, so I woke up later than usual the next morning. On a normal Saturday I’ve already reached the synagogue gate by the time she reaches the Robertson light. I watch her cross and start down the same block I just walked. I’m off the path before she’s on it. That’s why in two months we’d never crossed. Sleeping late meant I was still two blocks short of the gate when she came down Whitworth, and for once we were on the same stretch at the same time.

I woke up already in the state. And then, on Whitworth, the moment arrived.

Now back to her taking off her headphones. I had run every scenario. Rehearsed conversations, ran simulations, drilled what I would say and how. And the second she pulled the headphones out, all of it was wiped. A full reset. I could not remember a single line I had prepared. So I went quiet, and then I just told her the truth. I said I did not know why but I had been so nervous to come introduce myself, and I only wanted to say hello. I asked her name. She told me. I introduced myself. She was kind.

She told me she had a boyfriend, and I said, well, I guess this one was for me then.

We both laughed. I said I would see her around at the gym. She kept walking east and I walked west toward synagogue.

I walked away feeling like I had broken something. The belief, the stories, the loops, all of it. And what broke them was how small it was. A one minute conversation that was completely natural.

Here is the part I did not understand until it was over. I had written it all down in advance. A manifesto about the clean room. An action about the natural crossing. Each one felt true when I wrote it. But the manifesto was not wrong and then corrected by what happened. The truer version came out of doing the action, which is usually where truth comes from. You do not think your way to the accurate version. You act, and the act hands you the part you could not see from the desk.

What the manifesto could not see was that the cleanness was never about the room. When I come in with full care, truth, love, understanding, it comes natural every time. When I come in with need, control, manipulation, it explodes in my face, or there is a lesson waiting for me in the wreckage. Care makes any room clean. Need makes any room a toil. The gym was never special. The state was.

And the state was not something I produced by deciding to. It came from a table I could not have scheduled, a conversation that ran until two in the morning, a late alarm I did not set on purpose. It wasn’t that I built myself into someone with the courage to speak to a girl in the one place that felt safe, my place. It’s that I stopped predicting and chasing outcomes that were never true to my natural self.

I will see her again. I have no idea what happens. Maybe it is awkward. Maybe I am awkward. That used to feel like a failure of the state, and now it just lives inside it. There is nothing to do except not block the flow and not force the moment. Whatever the situation asks of me, I will be there to answer it, as myself, with no audit.

Same as the table. Same as the street.
